The City Council of Ozamiz is considering the plan to impose a total banning on quarry operations in Labo River to address the major concerns; first on environmental degradation and 2nd ; the apprehensions on possible shortage of materials for the major infrastructure development of the City in the future.
Ozamiz City Vice-Mayor Nova Princess Parojinog-Echavez spearheaded the initiative on conducting a health audit on the situation of Labo River amidst reports on rampant illegal quarry operations both manual and mechanical quarrying within the whole stretch of the river.
Mayor Reynaldo O. Parojinog Sr., led the City Officials and the key personnel from the Mines and Geo-Science Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in conducting the ocular inspection from the foot of the runway of Ozamiz City Airport up to the barangay where the last quarry concession is found.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) previously released Seven names of existing concessioners who had acquired permits from the Office of the Governor to operate at the Labo River.
The DENR-MGB, ENRO, City Engineers Office and the City Council consolidated reports divulged that there are violations committed by some permittees and needed to be addressed.
The report pointing out that there are quarry operators conducting mechanical quarry operation in the in land outside the area of their concessions.
There are two ordinances due for deliberation at the city Council; an ordinance imposing total banning of quarry operation within the Labo River and the other one is the strict regulation of quarry operation.
Rampant quarrying in the area has posed imminent danger to the inhabitants near the Labo River due to massive landslide along the river banks.
Misamis Occidental MGB senior specialist Teresa Digamon said, there are major portions of the Labo river banks that needed to be protected before it totally give in due to the strong floods.
Aside from this, the City Government of Ozamiz has to reserve huge amount of its natural resources like stones, boulders, gravel and sand for its Billions Pesos Projects like the airport expansion, the on-going construction of Ozamiz City Coastal Bypass Road, Urban Drainage Project , Ozamiz City Clarin Interior Bypass Airport-Link.
